Food Blog, 1st Edition

I've been reading multiple food blogs all evening, so it was bound to happen . . .

I present you with my first Food Post (officially).

Tonight I decided I'd have a protein shake for dinner, since I didn't get the frozen chicken in the fridge early enough.
I recently bought some bananas and just happened to have frozen one this morning after deciding not to take it with me to the coffee shop as a snack.
So knowing I had banana's, I decided on the chocolate protein flavor over the vanilla.

Now, this shake below is a LOT higher in calories than my normal protein shake would be. But since I was a very good girl today with my eats, I had plenty of calories to spare!
But in making your own, make sure you count every ingredient- because they add up fast!

I normally don't like my shakes too thick, but tonight I decided since I was eating dinner early (5:30) I should make it pretty thick to hold me over. So I added a few extra ingredients (read= extra calories).

One cup of milk (I'm actually not sure how much milk I used because I took this picture after I made my shake and realized I didn't take a picture of the milk!). But 1 cup sounds about right!

A dose of peanut butter- my favorite choice is Jif Reduced Fat.

Yes, I'm aware that it has HFC, but frankly I don't care. JRF is one of my sweetest treats in life that I'm not willing to give up, at least not yet!
I used the serving size of 2 tbsp, but with the other thick ingredients below, I recommend just 1 tbsp- you'll still get the flavor but 1/2 the calories.

To add thickness and a smooth texture, I went with some plain yogurt. I would have used Greek Yogurt if they had it in this country, but they don't. So alas- plain fat-free yogurt it is (I used the whole container).

Of course, frozen banana's.

And don't forget the protein powder. This is Apex Lean Chocolate (which sadly they don't make anymore!). 2 scoops is just 150 calories and it tastes like cake batter- I'm not kidding!

Mix everything in a blender until smooth. Make sure you taste it as you mix because you might need to add some things as you go (I had to keep adding milk because it was SO thick!)

You can also add ice if you like- Jen loves a Thick & Cold shake. I prefer mine to be normal temp and a bit more runny. But that's just my personal preference.

Pour into a nice big cup and enjoy! I used my Large movie cup that I got from the theater months ago.

The cups they give you are Real cups! I got so excited that, to Jen's horror, I even grabbed a few that were left behind in the cup holders of empty chairs. I mean- those are real cups people!

Mmmmm-Mmmmm frothiness!
Seriously- this thing tastes more like dessert than dinner! And it actually is good for you!

As I mentioned, this is a lot higher in calories than I would normally make. I would normally choose one of the 3 - milk, yogurt, or peanut butter - and then use water and ice to thicken my shake. But as I said, I had extra calories to play with and I didn't want to waste them! :)

This shake, as is, came to about 600 calories.
Normally it would be closer to 350-400.

Enjoy!!

  1. We've been making PB+protein shakes lately too and I loove them! I tend to stay away from dairy, though, and have officially switched to Smart Balance PB (even though I totally Love Jiff too and really didn't want to give it up!!)

We have a natural, yummy whey protein pwdr we order too.. I could share the link via email if you want (the iPod won't let me paste here!)

AND cocoa powder makes them really delicious and is actually good for you -if you get the kind w/out sugar :) ...I just add a little honey to help with the sweetness.. and cinnamon bc it's so yummy! :)

I like the food-blogging idea! Fun stuff!

Did you tell me once that Thailand didn't have libraries?? (I get cookbooks at the library sometimes..)
